Why is it that some individuals can appear stuck while others navigate change so easily? What are the active ingredients necessary to thrive in the face of changes? In our thriving thru change series, we will unpack the human condition. After all, what is happening today is not a mental health crisis, it is our human hard-wiring being put on full display. This series will explore the seven variables that are “must-haves” to navigate change more easily.
Why is awareness of the problem a must have?
Our awareness of a problem influences the decisions we make when we solve problems. The beliefs we have about the problem can influence how accurate our assessment of the situation is. Based on that assessment, our decisions will either help us land the plane and make progress or continue to circle the runway feeling stuck. Use the check-list below to compare with how you typically go about understanding a problem.
Do you have a sense of the specific problem(s) you need to address?
Can you identify the underlying problem(s) that are keeping you from making necessary adjustments?
Are you aware of your beliefs and feelings around an issue?
The key to these questions is to help you separate the surface factors from actual causes. When we can learn to recognize the role our feelings and beliefs have around an issue the better equipped we are to more accurately assess a problem. Depending on how you answered these questions you now have a third factor that can work for you or against you, when it comes to thriving thru change.
Awareness is one factor of seven. When you have at least 5 of these seven factors working your favor, you will find yourself navigating change relatively easily because you are able putting your energy into productive and helpful actions that will improve your day to day. While we will always experience difficulties and setbacks because we are human beings, our ability to maintain optimism, perspective, and productivity are a reflection of how many of the seven factors we have in our corner.
